Brick Colour & Texture Identification
Colour is one of the first things people notice when matching a brick, but it is rarely enough to identify an exact product. Texture, sand coating, firing variation and edge profile often provide more useful evidence.

Look at the grain and texture as well as the base colour. A brick may have a fine sandy coating, rough texture, smooth face, speckles, darker patches, iron spots or bands of colour. Photograph several bricks because one face may not represent the whole batch.
Common reasons colour looks different
- Natural daylight versus warm indoor lighting.
- Wet bricks appearing darker and more saturated.
- Soot, algae, dust and pollution on older walls.
- Cleaning exposing a fresher underlying surface.
- Camera white balance and phone processing.
- Different firing conditions between production runs.
Look at the edges
Edge sharpness and arris shape can help separate products that have similar colours. Also look for wirecut lines, drag marks, sanded faces and handmade irregularity.
Use colour as evidence, not proof
A good brick match normally combines colour with dimensions, texture, manufacturing method and any frog or maker's mark. When replacing a brick, always compare a physical sample before buying a large quantity.
